Babies and toddlers need a lot of sleep. In fact, many health experts recommend that newborns sleep from 14 to 17 hours a day. Toddlers benefit from 11 to 14 hours, and other growing little ones need up to 13 hours. Even when they start school, most children should try to get between 9 and 11 hours of sleep a night. That means that a good mattress is worth its weight in gold. At Pottery Barn Kids, we have furniture mattresses custom designed for babies, toddlers and beyond. If you are not sure exactly what to look for in a kids’ mattress, there are styles available that are designed to make your life a little bit easier and your child’s slumber even more pleasant.
When it comes to babies, having a firm mattress is more than just a personal preference. Infants need support to ensure they remain in an optimal sleeping position throughout the night. A mattress for babies should also be very resilient, so if you press your hand into it with medium pressure, it should bounce back immediately. With infants, you don’t want the surface to mold itself to their body. Instead, it should be a solid layer that helps them lay flat.
Size is another critical characteristic for newborns. You want a mattress that slides into place inside the crib, with no openings or spaces of any kind. That keeps little ones safe. Many mattresses for babies feature raised edges for security. Square corners cover all the bases. The same thing goes for cribs with rounded edges. An oval mattress offers complete protection.
One thing that many parents might not think about is the weight of the mattress. However, it makes a big difference. Something that doesn’t weigh too much is a major relief for tired muscles. After carrying your precious little one around and feeding him or her, it’s refreshing to slide a mattress out effortlessly when you need to change sheets.
For toddlers, the right firmness for them depends on you and your child. Maybe you want to accustom your baby sleeping on a firmer mattress. If you notice that your baby starts to complain or has trouble sleeping, it might be time to go a bit softer. A combination of fabric and coils support their growing body while cushioning it. Some crib mattresses feature dual firmness. That means that one side is very firm for babies, and the other is ideal for toddlers. All you need to do is flip them when the time comes.
Choosing how big a mattress that is necessary is another option that’s totally up to you. Some parents prefer to use a convertible crib that transforms into a sleeping space for toddlers. Children up to age 3 are often totally fine with that mattress size. Other moms and dads decide to pick out a full bed or twin bed right away. This way, they let their child grow into it. One advantage of a larger bed is the ability to invite friends for a sleepover. A trundle bed is a nice way to accommodate little visitors.
All of our beds are safe for kids, without harmful odors or chemicals. Some pieces take it to the next level with GREENGUARD Gold organic certification. Organic products are made without any toxic chemicals all the way from farm to factory. The purpose is to reduce the chances of allergies in youngsters. Non-latex constructions also eliminate some common allergies.
Another big help for parents is a waterproof layer. That way babies and children who are still being potty-trained don’t need to feel bad if they have an accident. It only takes a few minutes for mom or dad to clean and change sheets. Kids feel confident and comfortable. Most mattresses for kids are used only one-sided, which means you don’t need to worry about flipping them all the time. They stay firm and comfortable for a long time. A good night’s sleep helps your youngster absorb more knowledge in school and have a positive attitude all day long.
