Bone and Candy Dig

Grab your inflatable pool from warmer months and make it into a Halloween archaeological dig. It’s a great game for both indoors and out. For little kids, fill the inflatable pool with small orange and black balloons and let them reach in for candy that you’ve placed on the bottom of the pool. Older kids may prefer digging through sand to find little plastic skulls or pumpkins filled with candies placed on the bottom of the pool. To scare the big kids even more, add some fake bones into the pool.

Terrifying Treasure Hunt

Whichever little school-age ghoul finds all the letters to a Halloween saying wins a little ghastly gift to take home. Use sticky notes under  Halloween themed plates and have guests hunt down all the letters. Hide some of the plates with the letters around the room or even outside. For a quick game, use a short phrase, such as “Happy Haunting,” or “Trick-or-Treat.” For longer games, use phrases such as “Do You Believe in Ghosts?” or “Beware! Black Cat Crossing.”

Haunted House Dare

If you have a bed canopy either hidden in a closet or in use, have it do double duty as a fun haunted house during a Halloween party. All types of canopies will do, from simple round, sheer fabric ones to more whimsical ones of any shape. Set it up in the party room and place white twinkle lights or an eerie black light inside. Add faux spider web material inside and outside of the canopy to create a haunted habitat. For a creepy, crawly game, shut off the lights and have one child at a time reach into the canopy and see if they can identify what they feel. Hang some plastic skeletons and bones, plastic spiders and more inside so it’s a little frightening when they reach into the haunted canopy.

Make a Monster Mash Mask

Mask-making is a creative Halloween activity for kids of all ages. Find blank foam eye masks in black or white for kids at a craft store or Halloween supply store. Set up the craft center with scary Halloween-themed spiders, bugs, baubles and glitter. Have guests create a mask that matches their costumes. Whether it’s fairy princess purple gemstones or superhero neon-colored sequins, everyone goes home with a colorful customized costume accessory.

Hair-Raising Balloon Toss

Complete your kids’ Halloween games with a balloon toss that will have them giggling till midnight. You can make this game structured or just plain fun and random. For a structured game, head down to the playroom and have the kids stand on a rug in a large circle. Give each child a small plastic funnel. Have the kids toss a balloon across the circle and catch it in a funnel. Anyone who misses the balloon or steps off the rug is out of the game. If you just want to see your kids have a ball with balloons, blow up a bunch of black and orange ones and let them toss them around using their funnels.

Mini-Ghoul Golf

Put your handmade and any other Halloween decor to good use. If you have a plastic pumpkin or skull with a large open mouth, use it to golf for goodies. You can even use a real pumpkin that you’ve carved. Grab some kid-friendly golf clubs and ping pong balls. Or, use a large fake spider and have kids aim the ball to go under its legs. If you prefer, the kids can toss small bean bags into pumpkins instead. Gift guests with candy when they make it into or under the hole.

Creepy Candy Toss

Kids of any age always love filling up their treat bags with even more candy to take home. Use tiny candies, even candy corn, for tossing into treat bags. Create a line that each child stands behind while tossing. Have kids compete against each other, or give each child his or her own turn, but have loads of little candies on hand for lots of tossing time!
