How To Style A Playroom

Q+A: How To

Style A Playroom

with Brittany Fullwood

Lifestyle Blogger

Brittany Fullwood lives in Houston with her husband, Zach, and their two boys, Bear (5) and Boone (7 months). They recently moved into a new home and are enjoying the decorating process, especially when it involves the boys! Brittany’s goal is to keep things modern and fresh while still staying true to the family’s Southern roots. When Brittany isn’t working on house projects, she loves playing golf and watching Hallmark Christmas movies.

1. What inspired your design for this space?

I wanted a playroom that would be functional for both boys, despite their age gap of 5 years. I fell in love with the Modern Baby line and knew we needed to fill our playroom with pieces from the line that would be timeless and last with two rough boys!

2. How did you achieve making the playroom both baby friendly and kid friendly for both of your children? What are your must-haves for baby and for kids?

This wasn’t as challenging as I thought, especially since Pottery Barn Modern Baby furniture is so well made. We had shelves in our last home that weren’t mounted to the wall, and this would scare me with a baby (or even Bear and his friends who like to sword fight). Both the Sloan bookcase and Sloan bookrack that we have mount to the wall, so I can rest assured that we won’t have furniture safety issues. All Pottery Barn Modern Baby pieces are finished with a child-safe, water-based paint as well so I don’t have to worry about little mouths gnawing on them (yes, my baby chews on everything!).

My must-haves are definitely a good book case like the Sloan bookrack—we love displaying seasonal books and current favorites here. Also baskets and bins—you can’t have enough! They’re great for organizing toys and can be easily moved from room to room.

3. What are your favorite pieces in this space?

This is a tough one, but I’d have to say the HUG LIFE sign and the Evo rug. We get tons of compliments on the sign and Bear likes it best at night when it illuminates the room for “camping”. The rug has been amazing—it really lightens up the space and brings it to life. I couldn’t believe the quality when we got it—it’s another piece that I know will last for years to come.

4. Which pieces would you recommend to someone who wants to redecorate a playroom of their own?

Again, I’d say the Evo rug is a game-changer! It adds so much light to a space and I’m always amazed how much adding a large rug can change up the look of a room (even over carpet, like ours). The Sloan table and chairs are also a must-have for any age.

5. What are your best storage techniques for a playroom?

Separate toys by groups like: toys with wheels, plushes, trains, dolls, etc. And if you have small children, always keep toys with small pieces stored on higher shelves. Label everything if you can, and make sure all bins/baskets can be reached by your child so they can learn to pick up after themselves! We like to make clean-up fun by turning on music and making it a game—who can find the most trains to put in their basket?

6. What are your favorite activities to do with your kids in their playroom?

Bear is a really good little artist—he LOVES to draw and create art. We make sure to display his creations on a wall in the playroom—this way he knows we are proud of what he creates and it inspires his imagination and play too. When we’re not drawing or coloring at the table, we have a storage bin full of costumes and love playing pirates. Boone just watches the fun for now (and crawls in circles around us) but I can’t wait until he can join in with us!

7. What is your number one tip for creating a welcoming playroom?

Keep things light and bright. Don’t be afraid to have white furniture in a playroom—when furniture is well made, this doesn’t really matter. And we have rules for that reason! Our entire house has lots of white so Bear has learned rules like no shoes in the house, and you only color on paper. Add different textures to the playroom—a canvas tee pee, a wool rug, a knit throw. All of these elements create a warm, welcoming space that your kids and their friends (and you) will love!

Time to tidy up your playroom!
