Sydel Curry-Lee and Damion Lee’s Sweet Sanctuary

Sydel Curry-Lee and Damion Lee’s Sweet Sanctuary

When first-time mom Sydel Curry-Lee set out to design her little one's nursery, she had some ideas about color. "We're having a little boy, and I'm not much a blue kind of girl," Sydel admits. So along with basketball star husband Damion Lee, she landed on a simple palette of a natural, deep green.

I wanted to keep a neutral tone but with a pop of color. The forest green adds that kid-friendly aspect, and it’s calming.

The couple envisioned a soothing and sophisticated nursery that was still packed with elements of baby-appropriate fun. “I’m a very traditional person,” Sydel says, “so I wanted to keep a neutral tone but with a pop of color.” The Parker 3-in-1 Convertible Crib and Parker Extra-Wide Dresser & Topper created a neutral foundation, to which she added Urbanwalls Irregular Dots Wall Decals and pretty pops of green. “I love the forest green—it adds that kid-friendly aspect, and it’s calming,” Sydel says.

Creating that sense of calm was essential to Sydel, whose podcast Because Life with Sydel focuses on mental and emotional wellness. “We want this to be his place of solace, a safe space for him to rest and feel at home,” she says. The couple sees it as a peaceful space for them as a family, as well. “It’s a great space for us to be able to come in, get away from all the distractions of the outside world, and focus on our baby,” Damion adds.

With that in mind, the couple chose the Dream Swivel Glider & Recliner as their comfy snuggle spot. “When I think about becoming a first-time mom, I imagined myself in the chair with the baby,” Sydel says. “And your mom’s going to love the chair,” she adds, looking at Damion. “Oh, for sure!” he says. “This will be her first grandchild.”

Damion’s design input was the animals throughout the room, from the Washable Wool Lion Rug to the Giraffe Plush Nursery Rocker and the Baby Elephant Framed Art. He says: “My favorite piece in the nursery is the picture of the elephant. That’s my favorite animal.” Ultimately, though, he wanted to be surprised by the collaboration between Sydel and Pottery Barn Kids. “When the team came and finished the room, I made sure I was the last person to see it! And it looks amazing.”

Sydel agrees: “Being a first-time parent can be nerve-racking, and you just want everything to be ready to go whenever the baby comes home. We couldn’t have done this without Pottery Barn Kids helping us bring our vision to life.” You might even say it was a…slam dunk.
