Hallie’s Sleek, Chic Makeover

HALLIE ADRIAN

Like many who’ve excitedly set out to design a new space, Hallie Adrian and her husband spent a lot of time browsing Pinterest. “We looked at a bunch of pictures, but there wasn’t a single image that represented our complete vision,” Hallie explains. The Oakland-based pair wanted the rooms they were creating for their new baby girl—her nursery and a playroom—to simply be an extension of their home’s neutral palette, with a feminine touch.

They were drawn to the textures in boho rooms, the clean lines of modern furniture and the femininity of more traditional nurseries. So, there was really only one thing to do: Create their own original, Pinterest-worthy space with touches of each aesthetic blended together for a sweet, modern mix.

Once they agreed upon their overall style, Hallie led point on design. At first, her husband pushed back on anything gold. But when used as an accent rather than a primary color—like the dresser pulls and sleek floor lamp Hallie chose—metallic features make a subtle statement.

As for those primary colors, the Adrians went with varying shades of cream and a gray-and-white polka dot wallpaper that’s so subtle it serves as a neutral. “We both had an aversion to lots of bright color,” Hallie explains. Plus, the two wanted to keep the foundation of the room gender-neutral to get more potential use out of it down the road. The solve? Pretty blush accents—like a changing pad, a supersoft rug and a handknitted blanket —that serve their purpose now and can be swapped out later. That rug just so happens to be  her husband's favorite seat in the room now.

"We love that the room is grounded in modern furniture but that it still has nice warmth. The nursery is sweet and chic [with] polka dot wallpaper, gold accents and beautiful neutral textures.”

The dresser serves as the room’s focal point. “Babies grow out of cribs and art, but a quality, versatile dresser can be a piece that you have forever,” Hallie explains. Plus, it’s GREENGUARD Certified, meaning it contributes to healthier indoor air. “Sustainable product was so important to us as we think about the future of the planet and health of our baby,” Hallie adds.

From wooden toys to handwoven baskets, eco-friendly materials that are good for kids and the planet were important details that Hallie wanted to incorporate. She loves that the furniture is safety tested to meet or exceed industry standards and that it’s GREENGUARD Gold Certified, which means it helps ensure cleaner indoor air quality.
