Joy Green has been singing to her daughter, Kai, since she was a newborn. The last step in Kai’s bedtime routine is singing, “You Are My Sunshine,” a ritual they started the night Green and her husband brought her home from the hospital. And, when she was pregnant with her son Bodhi, Kai started singing the tune to her mom’s belly. Inspired by the song, Green decided on a sunny color scheme brightened by touches of yellow and pink for her son’s new nursery.

With the help of Pottery Barn Kids’ Design Crew, Green carried the colorful theme throughout the room to create a cheerful space for unwinding. To brighten it up, she collaborated with local artist Lisa Chow to give the walls a wash of playful style. The result was a handpainted sunshine-and-rainbow mural that evokes summertime bliss.

She also wanted the space to be functional, cozy and eco-friendly, knowing they’d spend a lot of time here as a family. Each item needed to make sense, perform well and, of course, make them happy. Filled with versatile furniture, whimsical accents and lots of color, it’s a haven where her little ones will want to play in for endless hours and that’ll adapt as they grow.
