Around-the-Clock Sugar Cookies

  • Depending on the theme of your shower, this basic sugar cookie recipe can be cut into many shapes. For an around-the-clock theme, use large round biscuit cutters.

The glaze on these cookies creates a shiny hard coating, making it a delicious and functional base for decorating. Once the glaze is dry, use frosting pens to add the finishing touches to the clocks.

Ingredients - Cookies

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated lemon or orange zest


  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

  • Place the butter, sugar, vanilla and grated lemon zest in the bowl of an electric mixer. With the mixer set on medium-high speed, beat until the mixture is fluffy, stopping and scraping down the sides once to ensure the ingredients are well combined. With the mixer set on low speed, slowly add the flour mixture. Beat only until a smooth dough forms.

  • Divide the dough into two equal discs. Wrap them well in plastic wrap and chill until ready to use.

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Remove the dough from the fridge. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the discs to 1/4 inch thickness and cut the cookies into the desired shapes. Use a spatula to place them on baking sheets lined with parchment paper or silicone baking sheets. Bake for 10 minutes, or until the cookies are light brown. Allow them to cool on the pans for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling.

  • Roll out the remaining dough scraps and cut into more cookies.

  • Once the cookies are cool, glaze or decorate as desired. Allow the glaze to dry completely before storing them in airtight containers. They may be kept at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Ingredients - Cookie Glaze

  • 2 cups confectioner's sugar, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 2-4 tablespoons water
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • Optional: Food coloring, colored sprinkles


  • Combine the sugar, corn syrup, 2 tablespoons water and lemon juice in a bowl. Whisk to combine, thinning with up to 2 tablespoons additional water if needed. Color the glaze if desired. Dip the tops of cooled cookies in the glaze, allowing excess glaze to drip off before placing them on a drying rack. If using sprinkles, apply while the glaze is wet; allow the glaze to dry before piping any additional decorations.

To Decorate the Cookies

Decorating Pens in desired colors, available at Williams-Sonoma and most craft stores

  • Warm the pens if necessary according to the directions. To decorate the clocks, once the glaze has dried, carefully add the numbers to the clock. Allow them to dry before adding the hands to the clock. Once dried, finish each cookie by drawing a circle around the rim. Allow the cookies to dry completely before serving.

Makes up to 6 dozen cookies, depending on the size of the cutters.
