Cupcakes in a Jar

  • recipe photo
  • Cupcakes are always a hit at birthday parties, and these ones have an especially appealing bonus: they're portable. Serve them as a special dessert, or send one home with each child as a tasty thank-you party favor.

By alternating slices of cupcake and frosting, you're creating miniature fancy layer cakes that require no messy cutting and serving.

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix and required ingredients
  • Cupcake liners
  • 12 wide-mouth pint mason jars
  • 2 cans of white frosting
  • Resealable bag or piping bag with large tip
  • Sprinkles, nuts or toffee bits

  • Line a muffin pan with cupcake liners, and prepare the cake mix according to the package directions. Fill and bake cupcakes as directed; cool completely.

  • Remove papers from cupcakes and cut each in thirds horizontally.

  • Drop one cupcake layer into the bottom of each jar. Pipe frosting on top of the first layer. Add second layer of cupcake and pipe more frosting on top. Add the final layer of cupcake and top with a large swirl of frosting. Add a few sprinkles, nuts or candy pieces to the top.

  • Use ribbon or a mini clothespin to attach our thank-you tags.
