Tamara Waterston's Textured Toddler Room

Tamara Waterston's Textured Toddler Room

If there’s one piece of advice that blogger Tamara Waterston would pass along for parents transitioning their little ones from a crib to a big-kid bed, it’s this: Get your toddler involved. The interior design enthusiast and mom of two decided to make it a family affair—little Leo included—when it came to designing her son’s new room. “He loved his crib, and I had a lot of doubt it would be an easy switch,” Waterston explained. “But involving him in the process was really important, and I can tell he feels connected to his big-boy room. Giving kids ownership and a place that makes them feel safe and relaxed is so important."

I wanted to bring along elements from his nursery but also make it feel a bit more toddler-friendly and elevated in style.

To make the transition even easier, Waterston started with a familiar base. “I wanted to bring along elements from his nursery but also make it feel a bit more toddler-friendly and elevated,” she said. The family’s home is what they call “organic modern with a sprinkle of glam,” which provided the overall direction, bolstered by Leo’s growing tastes and Waterston’s love of travel. “Traveling has always been my biggest source of inspiration. I love seeing how other cultures use products or pair unexpected items together,” she said. You can spot those small personal touches from her travels that hold special memory or meaning around the room.

I know how much thought Pottery Barn Kids puts into providing their customers with sustainable and healthy options, like organic cotton and GREENGUARD Gold Certified furniture.

Using a similar layout to Leo’s nursery helped create the familiarity and warmth Waterston was after. His crib was transition-ready, which made building out the rest of the room a breeze. “If you know me, you know how much I adored our Rory 4-in-1 Convertible Crib! I believe it was one of the very first items I picked for his nursery. It was the focal point then and still is in his big-boy room,” she gushed. The fact that Waterston’s favorite pieces are as good for the planet as they are for her growing son is a total bonus. “I know how much thought Pottery Barn Kids puts into providing their customers with sustainable and healthy options, like organic cotton and GREENGUARD Gold Certified furniture. Knowing the products are healthier, better for the environment and for your home provides a peace of mind that is unmatched,” said Waterston.

Aside from healthier furniture options, texture was another key element that played a starring role in this redesign. “I love texture and typically shy away from a lot of color, so having layers to add more dimension to the room is crucial. All three of the rugs in his room are gorgeous, but layering the ABC rug made for the most unexpected and darling little play area,” she said.

Fun, unexpected moments also shined through with Waterston’s artwork selection and bookcase styling. “I also have a very big love for Minted artwork, the Love one, Love all Framed Art [print] that is hanging by Leo’s bed is my all-time favorite. Something about the simple art layered over the Tempaper Goodbye Moon Wallpaper is lovely. I say ‘I love you to the moon’ every single night, so when I found the moon wallpaper, it was a must!” said Waterston.

This was one big hurdle I was dreading, and it could not have gone smoother.

The final touch was letting little brother Rolf in on the fun, with his very own big-kid bed ready and waiting for the day he transitions out of his crib. “I really cannot wait to see them in there together. I truly believe having that bed already set and in place is going to help our youngest’s move into a big-boy bed so much easier,” said Waterston. As for little Leo, he’s a very big fan of his brand-new bedroom. “Leo loves to show [his room] off to friends!” she said. “This was one big hurdle I was dreading, and it could not have gone smoother. He might end up taking that bed to college—that is, if I can ever part with it!”.
