Modern Pop Toddler Room

When LA-based fashion and interior designer Erin Fetherston and her husband Gabe Saporta, wanted to upgrade their youngest child’s toddler room, they turned to our Design Crew for help with a nursery that would grow with their family. Since the majority of the couple’s home has an earthy, elegant California aesthetic, she thought her son’s bedroom would be a great place to inject pops of bold color. Fetherston and our experts landed on a kid-friendly nursery design that reflects her refreshingly modern taste.

Fetherston wanted a space that felt crisp, cool and cheerful. She loves the juxtaposition of primary colors against tones of bright white and matte wood accents because she believes it’s an ideal background for children’s books and toys, which tend to be all the colors of the rainbow. She chose the West Elm x PBK Emilia Multi-Color Dresser to set the room’s tone, added matching decor and went neutral with the rest of the space.

“I wanted to have colorful centerpieces for my son to look at and engage with in his room while still creating a tranquil environment.”

Cozy textures were also an important part of the equation because the fashion designer knew they’d create a soothing environment that’s conducive to sleep. And, since Fetherston’s son is just 16 months old, the design needed to grow with him through his toddler years and then transition into a big-kid space later on. That’s why she chose the white Sloan Acrylic Convertible Crib, which can easily be used in a completely different design schematic. Contemporary pieces like the Colorful Globe Chandelier will also serve her son for many years to come.

"White and light-colored wood look great next to vibrant, colorful books and toys so [I chose neutral-colored] storage pieces and bookshelves.”

“I think this room is a great match for [my son’s] personality and given that the infusion of color is a distinction from the rest of our house, it feels like a special place all his own."
