Amy Welch's
Old-Meets-New Nursery

Amy Welch's Old-Meets-New Nursery

When midwestern mom and lifestyle influencer Amy Welch was expecting her second child, she already knew a thing or two about designing a kid’s room. But after welcoming Shepard to the world, she wanted this space to say BOY—a major shift from her daughter’s style.

He is so observant and loves looking around the room, so I wanted him to have fun and colorful things to look at.

So she went back to the drawing board and leaned into more masculine elements (think: rich wood grains, leather drawer handles and geometric shapes), before eventually letting her son’s personality lead the way. The result? Happy and charming, plus plenty to pique his ever-growing curiosity. “He is so observant and loves looking around the room, so I wanted him to have fun and colorful things to look at,” Welch said. “Everything from the piggy bank to the sushi crib sheet and modern rug fulfilled this for both of us.”

I knew I wanted something that would last and transition as my tastes and homes changed.

The room’s design centered around the gender-neutral pieces passed down from big sister Penelope, including the Kendall Convertible Crib and nursery chair: “When we bought the crib and rocker for my daughter over four years ago, I knew I wanted something that would last and transition as my tastes and homes changed. I love their sentimental value, but I really love that they can be worked into many styles."

With those large pieces still in near-mint condition, Welch could focus on the little things in a bigger way. By incorporating vintage pieces with modern lines and sleek storage, the space feels lovingly curated without any fussiness or clutter. Whimsical accents pull it all together. (The rocket-shaped storage is a family fave.)

Don’t worry about getting the nursery done prior to baby’s arrival. Once they are here, incorporate pieces from their personality.

Welch’s advice for new parents is this: “Don’t worry about getting the nursery done prior to baby’s arrival. Once they are here, incorporate pieces from their personality, it will help you love the space that much more! Invest in good, strong pieces and accessorize with the fun ones.”
