Nursery Planner: Design Your Dream Nursery

The nursery is a magical place where you and your new baby will spend precious time together. We created this room planner to help you take your nursery design from concept to completion. Follow our three simple steps and you'll be well on your way to creating the nursery of your dreams.

Tips for a Great Nursery Design

GET INSPIRED
Each room design starts with inspiration, and the nursery is no exception. Crib bedding is a great place to find inspiration for the nursery Choose your bedding and then build a design theme around it.

GIVE IT FORM
Use furniture pieces including the crib, rocker and changing table to create the building blocks of your nursery. Be mindful of overcrowding the space, & be sure not to block doors, windows or natural walkways.

MAKE IT FUNCTIONAL
Design a nursery that is as functional as it is beautiful by adding elements that will make your life easier — cribs with side rails that lower easily with one hand, changing tables with drawers or shelves for extra storage, and nursery bedding and changing table covers that are machine-washable.

ADD A PERSONAL TOUCH
Details, like an album with your baby's first photos or a shadow box featuring the booties and cap your baby wore home from the hospital, make a nursery feel special and unique.

THINK AHEAD
At first, your baby will spend most of her time sleeping and eating. Before you know it, though, your little one will be much more active – sitting, crawling and then walking. Plan for this in your nursery design by creating an environment that will grow with your child.

KEEP SAFETY THE TOP PRIORITY
All Pottery Barn Kids nursery furniture, bedding and accessories meet or exceed U.S. and Canadian safety regulations. As you design your nursery, keep these safety details in mind: make sure the crib is not near a window, keep drapery and blind cords away from the crib and protect electrical outlets.

Design Your Nursery - It's easy as 1, 2, 3

The nursery is a magical place where you and your new baby will spend precious time together. It's also .the room in the house that is the most fun to design. At Pottery Barn Kids, we want to help you take your nursery design from concept to completion. Follow these 3 easy steps & create the nursery of your dreams.

Step 1 - Measure Your Space

Plot your nursery dimensions on the adjacent room grid. You will need a pencil and a metal tape measure to complete this step.

WALL-TO-WALL MEASUREMENTS
Measure your nursery from wall to wall. Use your measurements to draw the room's perimeter on the grid. Note that each square on the grid represents one foot (1') or twelve inches (12").

DOORS, CLOSETS & BUILT-INS
Measure doors, closets and built-ins from the outside trim. Note whether doors open in or out. .Mark on the grid.

WINDOWS
Note window heights, as well as window distance from the floor, as you might want to put cabinets and window seats below. Also measure and note the window height and width inside the window trim, as you might want to hang a window shade behind your draperies.

CEILING HEIGHT
Measure the main ceiling height. Measure and note any archways or anything else impeding the space such as a soffit.

ELECTRICAL & HEATING VENTS
Mark all electrical outlets with an H.

Step 2 - Develop Your Design Direction

Now it's time to get creative and craft the heart of your nursery design.

GIVE THE NURSERY SHAPE WITH FURNITURE
Start with pieces including the crib, rocker and changing table. Then consider whether you have room for additional pieces like an armoire, dresser, bookshelf, side table or children's play area.

ADD SOME COLOR
This is the time to let your imagination run wild and create a dream environment for your little one to spend his or her first years. Bright colors, soft pastels and neutrals can all work well in a nursery setting. Your crib bedding will help pull the theme of the nursery together. Then select three hues from the bedding — a light, medium & darker tone — and use these as the foundation for your color palette.

PLAY WITH DETAILS
Your special touches give the nursery its unique personality and warmth. Consider adding a thick rug for you and baby to play on, baskets or shelving for extra storage, window coverings that will be especially important at naptime and a lamp to provide soft light for nighttime feedings.

MAKE ROOM FOR BABY
Will your new baby be sharing the nursery with a sibling? If so, plan this into your design. Our Pottery Barn Kids nursery furniture & bedding coordinates with many of our kids' furniture & bedding collections.

Step 3 - Create Your Floor Plan
