We are parents, too, and we are committed to making sure everything we sell is as safe for your kids as we demand that it be for our own. You can be confident that our toys are carefully and rigorously tested for harmful toxins and dangerous parts, and that they meet or exceed all government standards. The end result is children's products that are unique, fun and safe to play with.
Our testing includes the following:

All surface coatings undergo extensive chemical testing to determine the concentration of dangerous heavy metals like lead. Industry standards allow for 600 lead parts per million. We have set our own internal standard of 90 lead parts per million. Additionally, we test for Antimony (Sb), Arsenic (As), Barium (Ba), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), Mercury (Hg), and Selenium (Se). The testing process on each product includes scraping surface paints off the product, digesting these paints in acid, and using a chemical instrument to determine the concentration of lead and other heavy metals to ensure that standards are met.

All products that are liquid, paste, putty and gel undergo toxicological testing to ensure that they are safe for children to play with. No animal testing is done. Ingredients for each of these items are reviewed by a board-certified toxicologist who determines whether they are safe for use.

All graspable components on our toys undergo tension testing of up to 15 lbs to prevent a hazardous component - such as a sharp point or edge, or small part - from releasing. Fabric and seams on stuffed toys are tested up to a 21 lb force and the stuffing is registered and tested for cleanliness.
We want to create products that make the least possible impact on the environment. We recognize that there is much to be done, and we are committed to continually growing green as a company. With that in mind, we offer a broad range of durable and sustainable products including everything from organic bedding and FSC-Certified furniture to an assortment of toys made by the best and greenest toy manufacturers in the world.
Our practices include the following:

We use FSC-Certified woods on all outdoor furniture, select indoor furniture and the paper on which we print our catalogs. FSC certification ensures that the paper and wood products we use comes from well-managed and responsibly harvested forests that adhere to strict environmental and socio-economic standards. For more information on FSC Certification, please visit www.fsc.org.
Some of our newest toys are created from durable, sustainable and renewable resources. They are made of sustainable rubber-wood that is harvested responsibly in Thailand and are painted with natural, water-based dyes. We partner with Plan Toys, a green company that uses a natural kiln-drying process in place of chemical treatments to preserve wood. Plan Toys also uses special non-formaldehyde, nontoxic glue and recycled packaging printed with soy-based inks. We also partner with Wonderworld Toys, a green company known for its Tree Plus Program, an initiative with The Rabbit in the Moon Foundation to plant two trees for every one tree used for Wonderworld's toys. The foundation has a goal to replant 12,000 trees in the Ratchaburi province of Thailand.
We are changing our packaging and in-store signage to use recycled materials and in general use less materials that create waste and deplete our natural resources.
Almost all of our percale bedding is now Oeko-Tex certified, the world's definitive biological certification process that tests fibers and threads to ensure that bedding is healthy for you, for those who produce it and for the environment. Requirements for our manufacturers to be Oeko-Tex certified include:
- comply with specified criteria to avoid or limit the use of harmful substances in production
- observe stringent limit values relating to waste water and exhaust air
- optimize their energy consumption
- ensure low noise and dust pollution

We continue to expand our offerings of 100% organic products in bedding and baby apparel. Organic cotton is grown without the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers and is also a great choice for parents who want to create an allergen-free environment. In addition to our 100% organic products, Pottery Barn Kids is adding 5% organic cotton to almost all of our sheeting in order to support the growing organic cotton movement. Organic cotton is better for you, better for cotton workers and better for the environment.

Our nursery furniture can easily convert for big-kid rooms, which means the products you buy last longer. All of our cribs convert to toddler beds, and some even convert to full-sized headboards. Dressers and toppers easily transition by removing the topper, and our nursery seating is perfect in family rooms or big-kid rooms.
Our tabletop and party accessories are made to last and are reusable.
